What is volunteering?
Volunteering can be broadly defined as donating your time – usually to or for a good cause. There are many ways you can volunteer. In deciding how, when and to what cause to volunteer your time, you should consider what volunteering means to you.
What are your skills?
Although not all volunteering requires particular skills, it is generally a good idea to play to your strengths and interests. Volunteering at a food bank or a soup kitchen only requires that you are polite, organized and on time. Never underestimate the power of social interaction. Simply having a friendly conversation with someone can brighten their day – and yours too.
If you do not have a specialized skill, there are still many ways you can help. If you enjoy spending time with children, you can volunteer with a youth organization such as National Pharaohs Society, Inc. If you enjoy spending time with the elderly, you can volunteer with a nursing home. If you enjoy spending time with animals, you can volunteer with a conservation organization.
How much time do you have?
You don’t need a lot of time to volunteer. Even a few hours after work or school can make a difference. Remember to be realistic with your time commitments. If you’re a full-time student or working a full-time job, do not sign up for something that requires you to be available 5 days a week. Start slow and progress as you get to know your limits and what your schedule can handle. After you find what you like, you can volunteer for longer.
Is volunteering for you?
Volunteering is for everyone, young or old! Again, you do not have to dedicate a ton of time to it – just try it out. If you are nervous about trying it, ask a friend or two to come along. Bringing friends might help you ease into volunteering more easily, and you will also be adding volunteers to the cause. As mentioned before, you do not have to have any particular set of skills to volunteer. If you do have a particular set of skills, however, there may be specialized volunteering projects for you.
What is volunteering for professionals?
Professionals like accountants, architects, doctors, dentists, educators, and lawyers have very specific education, training, and experience. Professional volunteers may sign up to represent their professions at youth Career Awareness Day activities sponsored by National Pharaohs Society, Inc. Just like any other volunteers, professional volunteers should ask themselves what they can contribute besides their skills. Professionals are oftentimes great in participating in programs like mentoring, leadership development, and entrepreneurship.
What is volunteering for educators?
Educators have wonderful opportunities for volunteering opportunities with National Pharaohs, Inc. Most of our Youth Advisors will be educators. However, some volunteer opportunities will not require regular commitments or large amounts of time such as chaperoning group activities and events, leadership training, and career workshops. Whatever amount of time you can commit to volunteering with Pharaohs Society, Inc. will be greatly appreciated and may positively impact generations to come.
What is volunteering for students?
As community service is one of the National Programs of the Pharaohs Society, all Pharaohs are volunteers. Other students who have an interest in becoming a Pharaoh or simply desire to contribute to good causes without becoming members may volunteer for certain activities. Volunteering as a student can be great for a number of reasons, and it can give you an opportunity to learn while doing some good. Volunteering to do something that interests you can be a very fulfilling past time, especially during school vacations. If you are a high school student, you can volunteer after school, on weekends, and during breaks. If you are a college student, you can volunteer almost any time of the year.
Start volunteering today!
If you really want to start volunteering, there’s no better time than now to do it. If you’re an experienced volunteer, get out there and keep up the good work. It is people like you that make the world a better place. Be the change you want to see in your own city, state, country, or even the world. Remember, even if it is just for a few hours, volunteering can make a huge difference in the lives of others. So, what is volunteering to you?
